PTO Update

Hello Lawrence Community!

We hope you all are having a fantastic week so far… can you believe it’s almost February? Of 2020?! Crazy, we know… You know what else is crazy? All the amazing things going on at Lawrence! Come and be a part of it- hope to see you there!

First of all, just to catch everyone up to speed, the amazingly talented Math Department at Lawrence presented yesterday at the PTO Meeting/Principals’ Coffee and it was pretty incredible to see what they’re working on with students of all ages. They are diligently and thoughtfully crafting lessons for all types of learners and wow, do they love math! Their passion and excitement for the field shows and we are lucky to have them here at our school. Thank you to the team for all your hard work and energy! Click HERE to see their presentation.

Here’s a message from the Lawrence Math Specialists (Laura Basileo, Katy McGraw & Julieta Roz): Thank you to all the parents who attended our Math Presentation at the PTO meeting this morning.  We are so glad to have such wonderful collaboration with families at Lawrence and welcome more opportunities to work together.  Here are the slides from our presentation as well as two Google surveys.  One asks about your interest in participating in future math seminars for parents.  The other asks if you would be willing to share the ways that you learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide when you were in school in the place where you grew up.

Okay, now we are off and running. First thing this morning (Jan. 29th) we have a Lawrence School Makerspace Coffee from  8 – 9 a.m. in the Lawrence Makerspace. Drop by for some coffee and learn about Design Thinking and Makerspace work at the Lawrence School.

Looking for something to do on a chilly Wednesday night? Look no further… there is a Grades 5-8 Winter Band Concert at 7PM in the Lawrence Auditorium… TONIGHT! Yes, January 29th. Come and delight in the musical talents our kids possess (or might one day). Kids arrive by 6:45PM. White tops, black bottoms or as close to that as they can get.

And Annie really said it best when she said, “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow”… yes, TOMORROW is the much anticipated Lawrence Teacher & Staff Appreciation Luncheon from 11AM-1PM in the Teachers’ Lounge. If you are short on time, and want to donate towards the menu, please donate via PayPal. If you’d like to meet the team and participate, please sign up via SignUp Genius. We are always grateful for any kind of help and support. Parents and teachers working together make our community special. See the Volunteer Section for more information!

Here’s something awesome… we are having a Black History Month Door Decorating Contest! Help students, teachers, and staff celebrate important figures in Black history! This month we’ll be decorating classroom doors with biographical displays honoring significant black Americans. Help your student’s classroom teacher, or sign up to decorate an available door! To participate, contact METCO coordinator Debra Morales at

And this weekend, don’t forget… we have Bridging Brookline to Boston on Sunday, February 2ndfrom 1-3PM. Join Lawrence teachers and families for a fun afternoon of bowling, pizza, and games at Boston Bowl in Dorchester (820 Morrissey Blvd, Dorchester, MA 02122). Enjoy an afternoon with friends, and connect with Lawrence families from around Greater Boston. The cost is $5/person and you can sign up HERE! You can also sign up & pay this Thursday, Feb. 1st, in the Lobby. OR- if you prefer, you can also pay on Sunday at the event. How easy is that?

If you have an 8th grader there are some informative and helpful BHS transition events starting on Feb. 3rd. These events are designed to help the Class of 2024 get ready for life at Brookline High School. Click here for complete information including an introductory letter with links to FAQs and the full list of transition events. There’s also a School Council Meeting next week on Tuesday, Feb. 4th @ 8AM in the Library.
And leave your car at home next Wednesday, Feb. 5th., because, you guessed it… it’s Car Free Day! Walk, bike, scoot, roll, take a bus or get out that pogo stick and get yourself to school and/or work (carefully- if you chose the pogo stick option). Your body and the planet say, “domo arigato”. And if your student would like to participate in stamping hands at school that morning (7:40-8AM), let Nicola Thompson know by email: Thanks!
Please see the Volunteer Section below for all sorts of wonderful ways to give back to Lawrence- here’s a glimpse: the Art Room needs help on Wednesdays, SET-J is looking for origami crane builders, you can donate books for the Used Book Fair & what the Makerspace needs right now. Also check out the Community Section for info on the next School Committee meeting, how to get more involved with B-PEN (Brookline Parent Education Network) & spring sports among other things. Don’t forget to click through to the links below the Community Section for info stashed away to save space!
One last final note… Double Dutch has been added to Early Morning Sports on Tuesdays at 7:30AM. Dreams do come true.

Until next time, have a great rest of your week and thanks for all you do!
