Principal’s Corner

Dear Lawrence Families,

The Public Schools of Brookline (PSB) has made a Grade Level Professional Development Model Change. In the past PSB Curriculum Coordinators created the agenda for the 2 days of PD for teachers in grades K-5. This model change is an effort to be more aligned in the PSB curriculum work and allow schools to help develop the PD that makes sense at their schools. This year principals are now leading this work. I believe strongly that, “people support that which they help create”. I have been working with teachers to have them direct this work in a way that is meaningful to their team(s). Each grade level, K-5,  is creating a plan for these two days. PSB Curriculum Coordinators and our Math and Literacy Specialists are also engaged in supporting this work.

Teachers at Lawrence have also self selected into 11 different Study Groups. These are topics that teachers believe will support their professional growth and help support our SIP goals. Time at staff meetings throughout the year will be provided and another 2.5 hours during the school day will be used by groups. At the end of this year each team will present at a staff meeting on the topic. Teams will present the “Why” this topic was selected, the “How” of the work and the “What” did they learn and will use in the classroom.

The Lawrence School Council met on October 4 and is in the process of prioritizing our School Improvement Goals for 2016-2017. The School Improvement Plan can be found on the PTO website. The SIP has 5 different goals with 3-4 subgoals each.

October 31 – Halloween Parade – K-2

Students in K-2 are invited to bring costumes to school. At about 2:10, K-2 students will start a costume parade on the field (in case of inclement weather this will be indoors). Your child(s) teacher will be providing more information. Parents are welcome to watch the parade. Students in grade 3-8 do not participate in the parade except as part of the audience. Please keep in mind our younger students and do not wear plan on wearing any scary, gory or violent costumes that might scare our students, including those students new to Lawrence that may be unfamiliar with an American type of Halloween.

Private School Applications

Each year, a small number of students apply to private school.  Most schools require a school report, school records and teacher recommendation(s).  At Lawrence, the guidance counselor completes the school report, not the principal.  In an effort to manage this process   efficiently, we have developed a records release cover sheet that we ask families to complete listing all the schools to which they are applying.  This form is required by us whether your applications are electronic or paper hard copies.  To obtain this form, please email our school secretary Christine Kohlsaat at .  You must allow at least 10 school days for reports and recommendations to be completed.
