September 8 News and Notes

Welcome to the 2014-15 School Year!

The PTO officers and board extend a warm welcome to all new and returning Lawrence families. As a reminder, school hours are now 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Monday-Thursday) and 8:00 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. (Friday only).

This week: New Family Welcome (Tuesday), Fall Picnic (Thursday).

This week’s Principal’s Corner: here.

The New Family Welcome is Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. in the library. Learn about the school, hear from the principal, PTO officers and other key figures, and meet other parents.

Our annual Fall Picnic is this Thursday in Lawrence Field, starting at 5:30 p.m. Pizza will be available for purchase. Help us keep the picnic green by bringing your own water bottle for free water fill-ups! Donations of baked goods for sale are greatly appreciated: just drop them off at the Bake Sale table when you arrive. Finally, don’t forget to visit the SET-J table for delicious rice balls, sorbet and a Japanese fishing yo-yo game ($1 each), as well as information about SET-J and Ms. Muendel’s trip to Japan this past June (see below) and Ms. Gannon’s trip this coming June.

Volunteers are needed to help the picnic run smoothly. If you can take a half hour shift (or longer) please contact one of the PTO co-presidents:  Pamela Iguchi, Florrie Ives or Nagmeh Ansari. Stop by to say hello! — we’ll be selling pizza ourselves or manning the PTO info booth.

All proceeds from pizza, the Bake Sale and the Set-J table benefit the PTO. Finally, the rain date is Monday, September 16.

Being an active participant in the PTO is a great way to stay informed, meet other parents and share your ideas and opinions. Please join us!

New this year, the PTO will host four special topic meetings, where guest speakers or panels have been invited to speak on different, timely issues of interest to parents. The first will be held Tuesday, September 30, at 8 a.m. in the library with Principal Rick Rogers as our featured guest. The remaining three dates and times are November 18 (8:00 a.m.), February 24 (7:00 p.m.), and April 14 (8:00 a.m.). Topics and speakers will be announced in this newsletter and on the website calendar one month ahead. In addition, the PTO will hold an additional four business meetings with its board throughout the school year. These meetings to discuss PTO plans, budget and other business are open to all parents. All board meetings will be held in the library with dates and times yet to be set but also announced in advance.

Open Houses are an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, learn about the classroom and curriculum, and to meet the parents of your child’s classmates. Open Houses are scheduled by grade:

  • Grades 6-8, Wednesday, Sep 17, 6:15 – 8:00 pm.
  • Grades K-2, Thursday, Sep 18, 6:00 – 7:15 pm.
  • Grades 3-5, Tuesday, Sep 23, 6:00pm – 7:15 pm.

Lawrence Special Activities (LSA) is back with some fantastic after-school class offerings this fall. Catalogs have been distributed to all of the children and are also available online. Classes do fill up quickly and registration forms are due back to the office by Monday, September 15 at 2:40 to be included in the lottery. We will have an open enrollment period after the 15th for any class that still has space available until all classes are full. Students will receive a confirmation of the schedule the week of September 22 and classes will begin on Monday, September 29.

Literacy specialist and former 7/8 English teacher Dianne Muendel visited Japan for ten days in June thanks to SET-J. The “Sending Educators To Japan” program, funded by the PTO, has been sending Lawrence teachers to Japan since 2002. Participants observe the Japanese educational system in various settings and experience Japanese culture firsthand. Upon returning, they share their experiences and discoveries with the Lawrence community, giving us a glimpse into another society as well. Click here to learn more about SET-J and read about Ms. Muendel’s trip.

If you would like to help at the Fall Picnic’s SET-J table, please contact SET-J by email.

For families new to Lawrence from Japan, we have a monthly Japanese Newsletter. The next issue will be distributed early in October. If you would like to see last year’s newsletter, please click here. If you need the password for the page, please contact Akiko Kawai.
