June 23 News and Notes

This week:  Last Day of School (Wednesday).

This week’s Principal’s Corner: End of Year Thanks.

NEWS AND NOTES

Thank you very much to Jennifer Mahoney and all of the volunteers who helped make last week’s Spring Picnic so much fun. It was a beautiful night! The 8th Grade Graduation and reception was another lovely evening thanks to organizers Jen Grella, Michelle Mulford and Alison Kulkarni and their team of 7th graders and parents.

The PTO Officers and Board appreciates the time and efforts of everyone who helped make 2013-14 a fun and enriching school year. In addition to those above, we offer Big Thanks to all of the organizers and volunteers brought us together at the Fall Picnic, the Food Day Festival, the Japanese Food and Fun Fairs, Family Fun Night-International Expo, the Gr 3-5 Play and PTO Play, Early Release Movies, the Used Book Fair, the Staff Appreciation Breakfast and Luncheons, Family Skate, the Art Show, and the Fun Run. Thanks also to those who worked as Library and Art Room volunteers, led the Performing and Visual Arts Councils, ran LSA, kept the Green Team going strong, ran the Understanding Our Differences program, and brought us the School Directory, School Photos, T-Shirts and the Yearbook. We are also grateful to our room parents and our B-PEN liaison, who kept us well informed all year. Last but not least, thanks to those who did the hard work of raising the money we need to support all these activities through the Phonathon and the Auction. We couldn’t have done it without you!

We welcome our new co-president, Nagmeh Ansari Varasteh, who will join Pamela Iguchi and Florrie Ives in leading the PTO next year, as well as Nancy Gracin who will be our new PTO secretary.

Great big “Thank you” also of course to Principal Rick Rogers, Vice Principal Monica Crowley, the incredible office team of Vikki Castellano and Maria Kalaitzidis, and all the fabulous teachers and staff of Lawrence School. We wish Monica well in her new role as principal of Old Lincoln School and look forward to getting to know new Vice Principal Laura Horst next year. We hope you all enjoy a beautiful and relaxing summer.

IMPORTANT HOUSEKEEPING

Please help us clean up our email list. If you will not be at Lawrence next year, please let us know or just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of this email.

Directory changes? If you will be moving out of district or have graduated, please contact Kathy Prelack and ask her to remove you from the Lawrence Directory. All verified users of the online directory will have access through the end of August. Families who return to Lawrence in the fall will receive instructions on how to update/renew a subscription for the 2014-15 school year.

Check out our Community Bulletin Board by clicking on the other link below, There are lots of great resources for summer fun to be found!

Don’t forget that our Amazon Shopping Link is active year-round. We earned over $1000 this year with this program–enough to cover field-trip bus fare for an entire three-section grade! So if you shop at Amazon, please bookmark this link and use it every time you enter the site.

COMING UP

Check out the Summer Reading Lists for Lawrence School and Brookline Public Schools as a whole:

Literacy Specialist Dianne Muendel left for Japan on Friday. She will spend time in Kyoto, Hiroshima and Tokyo, returning on June 29. Ms. Muendel will visit two schools and a college attended by former Lawrence students, spend a night with a former Lawrence family, and reunite with many Lawrence friends. Trip details are updated in the lobby and you can also follow Ms. Muendel’s adventures on her blog. She will give a presentation about her SET-J travel experience in 2014-2015 school year. We would like to thank IACE Travel Boston and Yamato USA Boston Branch, who help make this annual trip possible by donating generously to the SET-J program.

Ms. Keryn Gannon (2G teacher) is the recipient of the 2014-2015 SET-J grant! The “Sending Educators To Japan” program, which is funded by the PTO, has been sending Lawrence teachers to Japan since 2002. Click here to learn more about SET-J.

AROUND TOWN

More fun at our Brookline Public Library: this year’s Summer Reading Program is Fizz, Boom, Read! Children ages 3 and up can sign up at their local public Library from June 23rd through August 18th, or online. Choose a prize at the end of July if you’ve read at least 4 books, and then join us on August 20th (Coolidge) and August 21st (Putterham) for our end of the summer ice cream parties! As in year’s past, we’ve marked all of Brookline’s titles to facilitate your school-encouraged summer reading, but feel free to check out other books, DVDs, magazines and books on CD whenever you stop in to see us.

Thanks again to all the families who have baked cookies for Ronald McDonald House over the past ten years Lawrence has run its program! Unfortunately, the House has recently changed its requirements for accepting food donations, and home-prepared items are no longer acceptable. However, they are happy to have individuals or small groups (no more than four people) come bake on the premises if they bring their own ingredients. If you are interested in helping out in this way (or interested in coordinating such a community service project for Lawrence in the future), please contact Caitlin White at 617-734-3333.
