This week: Origami Crafting, Celtic Fiddle (Gr 2-5) and After-School Movie Registration Deadline(Monday), Override Informational PTO Meeting (Tuesday), K-12 Early Release at 12:40pm and After School Movie (Wednesday).

NEWS AND NOTES

The registration deadline for the PTO-sponsored after-school movie is today, Monday, at 6:00 p.m. The movie, Rio, is rated G and scheduled for this Wednesday, a K-12 early release day. The price per child is $6. Pickup after the movie is at 2:20 p.m. To register your child click here and sign up for a new account if you are new to the system. Register each child who will attend (note that you may register all siblings before payment on the final page). For safety reasons late registrations will not be accepted and children not registered will not be admitted to the movie. Please contact Makeeba McCreary to help manage the event from either noon to 1:30 or 1:30 to 3:00.

If you have time and would like to learn how to make origami crafts, please stop by the cafeteria this morning, Monday, from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. Join the crafting team as they prepare items for sale at the Japanese Fun Fair. A few volunteers are still needed to help sell tickets on the day of the Fair, May 7. Please sign up here or contact Ikuyo Aihara or Kay Kobayashi if you can help.

Also this morning, students in grades 2-5 will be treated to a musical performance by Frame, a Celtic fiddle ensemble featuring musicians from the BSO hosted by Lawrence parent and musician Lucia Lin. Performances will take place in the auditorium for grades 4 & 5 at 9:30 a.m. and grades 2 & 3 at 10:15. Parents are welcome to attend. Please contact Lisa Viola with any questions.

Be an informed voter! Join the PTO on Tuesday, April 14, to learn more about the override that will be on the ballot May 5th. Representatives from the “Yes for Brookline” campaign and current School Committee member Rebecca Stone will host an informational discussion about this important vote. We welcome all points of view regarding the vote and hope to see you at the meeting.

Lawrence Logo items will be available for sale on movie day, Wednesday, from 2:00 – 3:00pm. Please email the PTO if we miss you and you’d like to make a purchase or have a question.

Lawrence spring intramurals have begun.

  • Afternoon Basketball began last week, coached by Mr. Martinez & Mr. Page, grades 6-8, boys and girls: Fridays from 1:40 – 3:00 p.m. in the Big Gym.
  • Starting this week is Track and Field:practice times and days vary and will be posted shortly on the PE bulletin board.
  • Ongoing are Early Morning Sports:  grades 3-8, Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 – 7:50 a.m. in the Big Gym (in nice weather we may go outside).

COMING UP

The fourth annual Make Art at Lawrence K-8 Art Show will be held on Tuesday, April 28 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature over six hundred K-through-8 masterpieces. A few volunteers are needed to help the day of the show. Please sign up here or contact VAC member Linda Louie.

Coming up after April break: Pirates! 2: The Hidden Treasure! Please join the Grade 3-to-5 “Drama in the Afternoon” team for their performance of the musical Pirates! 2 on Thursday, April 30 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the Lawrence auditorium. The actors have been working hard on their lines and songs since January to be ready for these performances.

AROUND TOWN

Empowering Girls to Stand up to Media: a talk for parents of teen and pre-teen girls by Michelle Cove, founder of Mediagirls.  Tuesday, April 14, 7:00 p.m. at Coolidge Corner Library. The League of Women Voters will host two events regarding the override, debt exclusion and candidates on the May 5th ballot:

  • April 8, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Operational Override and Debt Exclusion Forum, Town Hall.
  • April 22, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Information Session on the Operational Override and Debt Exclusion, Brookline Senior Center.
  • April 29, 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Candidates Forum, Town Hall.
