Please join us at our evening PTO Meeting on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the library. Our guests from B-Pen will present Navigating the Middle School Years and Beyond: The Impact of Social Media, Shifting Friendships, and Stress. How do we balance our desire to raise resilient, healthy and independent children with the instinct to protect them? B-PEN Family Resource Advocate Hope Schroy, LICSW, will talk about adolescent development and lead us in discussions around a variety of middle school issues, from setting limits and managing the impact of social media to self-esteem and stress. The program is open to all, but we particularly encourage parents of students in grades 5-8 to attend.
Lawrence Reads arrivesThursday, March 5 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Pizza will be available for purchase in lobby for twenty minutes beginning at 6:00. Please bring your own water bottle. Register online by this Friday, February 27. This year’s titles are all nonfiction:
- Gr K-1: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
- Gr 2-3: The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth by Kathleen Krull
- Gr 4-5: My Life with Chimpanzees by Jane Goodall
- Gr 6-8: The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming
Copies are available in the Lawrence School and Brookline Public libraries. Books may also be purchased locally at Brookline Booksmith or online.
If you didn’t have an opportunity to take a look at the new Lawrence Logo clothing before February break, we will be selling items in the lobby before or after school in early March (dates TBA, check back in the March 2 newsletter or on the PTO bulletin board in the lobby). You may also email the PTO if you’d like to schedule a time to see and/or purchase a specific item. Items include: 2015 Lawrence T-shirts in white and charcoal gray for $15, hooded sweatshirts in charcoal gray for $35, plaid flannel pajama bottoms for $30 and Lawrence Loyalty sports necklaces for $10. Cash and checks accepted.
The Staff Appreciation Breakfast, hosted by METCO, is Thursday March 5th at 7:30 a.m. Please help them show the Lawrence School staff how much you appreciate the work they do for our kids, by bringing in a delicious breakfast treat or helping to set up that morning. The PTO Online Auction kicks off on March 8 and will continue through Sunday, March 22. The online auction includes summer camp sessions, family outings, music lessons, gift certificates to local restaurants and more! Thanks to the generosity of our donors, each dollar you spend will support teachers and classrooms, fund enrichment programs, and enhance the Lawrence experience for all members of our community. Please join the Lawrence Math Resource Center on Wednesday, March 18th, for “Standards of Mathematical Practice: How They Apply to School and Home”, a presentation for parents (especially of students in Gr 1-5) about shifting to the new math standards in Massachusetts. Come learn about how you can use daily activities to guide your child to become a strong problem solver! 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. March 18 in the library.
Brookline’s K-8 Science Fair is scheduled for March 14 at Devotion. K-8 students throughout Brookline are encouraged to attend. A video about the program may be seen here. Register by February 28th — forms are online. Note that you do not need to know the name of your project to register. The theme this year is Science of the Seas, and the Science Expo, for students to enjoy while their projects are judged, will showcase a touch tank from the New England Aquarium.
Brookline’s Pan Asian Lunar New Year celebration will be held Saturday, February 28th, from 12:30-3:00 p.m. at the high school. Light refreshments and free to all! Celebrate – Chinese New Year (新年), Korean Seollal (설날), and Vietnamese Tết Enjoy. Lion dancing, Asian food, music, crafts, games, performances (Classical Indian singing, Chinese yo-yo, , and more including table games for children and adults. Register online here. B-PEN’s Adopted Parent Network & Family Resource Advocate Hope Schroy invite 7th-12th grade parents of adopted teens to join us for an evening with Debra Olshever, co-founder of Adoption Associates. Debra’s presentation/discussion on March 2 will offer information, guidance and insight for parents of adopted teens. For more information click here.
The Brookline Education Foundation’s third annual Adult Trivia Bee takes place Friday, March 27th, 6:30 pm at the Heath School. The Bee is BEF’s only major fundraiser for the year and they would love to have all schools represented at this spirited event. For more information, contact BEF’s Communication Chair Emily Dolbear.
