Lawrence School Welcome!

Hello Lawrence Community –

Wow!  I have noticed night is starting to come earlier in the last few days and I have had the start of school jitters since last week – We all know what is just around the corner!  September 7th is a big day in my household on many levels, and I know it is for you as well.  As I shared before, my son is starting Kindergarten at Heath and of course it is MY first day of school at Lawrence.  I have been waiting a long time for these big events and my heart is full thinking of them both.  Thank you to those of you who have made time to meet with me, share your own reflections and thoughts about Lawrence and how, together, we can continue the great work that is happening here!

I have had a good summer and have spent a lot time reflecting and planning for the new school year.  On my off days, my family and I spent evenings in our driveway riding bikes and big wheels and picking tomatoes, zinnias and peppers from our garden.  We also got the chance to travel to South Carolina to visit family and had a few good beach days here and there.  My son’s basketball skills are coming along and he lost his front tooth and is no longer using training wheels on his bike – BIG MOMENTS!  My daughter, who just turned four, has been dressing up our new kitten, has mastered picking out her own outfits by herself and has learned the thrill of going super high on our swing set!

In thinking about the start of school, I thought it would be helpful to get a sense of some of the logistics for the first few days and beyond.  Some of this you received via the PTO mailing in early August, and there are few more things to take note of, so here goes:

Students/Grade Level Schedule
Grades 1 – 8 Thursday, September 7 – 8:00 am to 2:30 pm
Kindergarteners with last name beginning with A-L Thursday, September 7 – 8:00 am to 12:40 pm
Kindergarteners with last name beginning with M-Z Friday, September 8 – 8:00 am to 12:40 pm
All students K-8 MondaySeptember 11 – 8:00 am – 2:30 pm

Our school hours are Monday -Thursday 8-2:30pm and Fridays 8:00 – 1:40pm.  On the first day, all students should report to their classrooms/homerooms when the hallways open at 7:50 am.  If you need help finding a classroom, let us know, we will have a number of staff members ready to help you get to your child’s classroom. Starting on September 11th, students in grades 1-5 should be able to make it to classes on their own. We hope that over the year all students will foster a sense of safety and independence and a network of friends that can allow them to move through our school with confidence and ease.

Kindergarten parents: you are welcome to walk your children to class all year as you see fit.

On 9/7, and only on 9/7, new families (this excludes our Kindergarten students) will meet our guidance team in the main lobby between 7:40 and 7:50 to welcome you and to help transition your child to their classroom – at this point students can choose to say farewell to their parents and our team will be matching them with a peer buddy to help them get acquainted with their new school community.

Daily Arrival Expectations:

At Lawrence, students typically arrive each morning between 7:20 (bus) and 7:50 am. Students will enter the building through the front doors.  All students must report to areas in the school specifically designated for students to wait for the start of the school day to begin.

Students may wait for the hallways to open (at 7:50 am when the first bell rings) in the following areas ONLY:

  • Cafeteria (grade K-8)
  • Morning Sports (large gym)
  • Kindergarten (in the halls outside of their classrooms)
  • Playground (this is unsupervised by staff- we encourage families to stay with their children, if possible, while on the playground.)

Our goal is to decrease the amount of folks gathering in the front entryway and we have taken steps to have additional staff in the cafeteria so that students can wait there, if they arrive early, instead of congregating in the entryway.

Stay tuned —-Our Student Handbook is in the final draft stage and will be shared with you via email in the coming days.  Be sure to review and sign off using the parent portal in ASPEN.

Our PTO is having a meet + greet on the playground on the first two days of school – 9/7 + 9/8.  Be sure to stop by after dropping your child off.

Also, make note in your calendars for our upcoming Open Houses:

  • Grade K-5 will be on Wednesday, September 27th from 6-7:15
  • Grades 6-8 will be on Thursday, October 5th from 6:15 – 8:00

We have also taken some extra steps to make morning arrival on 9/7 + 9/8 even more exciting – come and check it out at the main entrance!

In closing, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of your village, I take this charge seriously and I am committed to leading with my heart and doing what is best for our students is paramount in my decisions.

Welcome (and for many of you welcome back) to Lawrence!

Take care,

Allyson Hart
