First Math League Meeting

Monday, November 27 from 2:30 to 3:30
In Room 317 (Mrs. Smid’s room)

Q:  What is Math League?
A:  Math League is a math club for students in grades 4, 5 and 6.

In a team atmosphere, students engage in solving mathematical problems during practices after school. All students are encouraged to attend Math League practices.

In addition, 5th and 6th grade students may compete in the 3 town-wide Math League Meets.

Q:  When does Math League practice?
A:  We will meet on Mondays after school, from 2:30-3:30, in Mrs. Smid’s room, Room 317.  We will begin on Monday, Nov. 27.

Mrs. Smid and Ms. McGraw are the coaches.

We encourage you to attend practice every week.

Q:  Do I have to “try out” or audition for math league?
A:  NO!  If you like math, and are willing to work hard, you are welcome to join math league.  The only requirement to be in the math league is that you regularly attend practices, and exhibit a positive, cooperative attitude toward your teammates.  We are very proud of the team problem solving trophies we have won in past years and are once again looking for good team solvers.

Q:  What happens at the Meets?
A:  5th and 6th graders may attend the Town-wide Math Meets.  There are 5 Topic competitions at each Meet.  Six students from each school may compete in each of the following topics:

  • Operations (problems involving computation and working with “order of operations”);
  • Patterns;
  • Geometry;
  • Bases (our number system is base 10;  binary system is base 2);

 Problem-Solving (this topic is a team competition– each school sends 3 teams of 3 students).

Students who are not competing in a topic will be able to work through the mathematical challenges with his/her team.  Teams will be given the problems to work on while sitting in the cafeteria.

Q:  How are the teams selected?
A:  Before each meet, students will be asked to list their preferred topics.  Team selection is based on regular attendance and effort during practices, in addition to other factors.  Students may not compete in more than 3 categories, and we hope that all eligible students will have an opportunity to compete in at least one meet, if desired.

Q:  When are Math League Meets?
A:  The meets are scheduled Thursday January 11, Thursday February 8, and Thursday March 8.  Snow dates will be announced later.

We will leave school in the early afternoon, before the end of the school day and take a bus to the meets, which will be held at Upper Devotion School.  The Meet is usually done by 4:15pm, and we return to Lawrence by bus arriving between 4:15 and 4:30.
