About METCO (Metropolitan Council for Education Opportunities)
A cutting-edge voluntary school desegregation program established in 1966, the METCO program was designed to provide the opportunity for children from racially-imbalanced schools in Boston and children from isolated suburban schools to learn together in an integrated public school setting.
Throughout its history, METCO has provided students with a strong academic foundation, as well as an environment rich in cultural, educational, ethnic and racial diversity.
Over the last half century, METCO has aided the graduation of more than 100,000 alumni and supports 3,300 students annually from Boston and Springfield in 37 suburban school districts and 190 schools participating from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
